This Lesson's Title:

The Ultimate Survivor

a survival plan that explores organization

This lesson was built for WritingFix after being proposed by Nevada teacher Laura Tremaine at an AT&T-sponsored in-service class for teachers.

The intended "mentor text" to be used when teaching this on-line lesson is the chapter book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Before writing, students should listen to and discuss the writing style of this book's author, especially from chapter 10 of the book.

Check out Hatchet at Amazon.com.

If you are a Washoe County teacher, click here to search for this book at the county library.

Three-Sentence Overview of this Lesson:

The writer will respond to the following questions: If you were stranded in a remote place what important items would you want to have?  How would you survive?  What sort of plan would you come up with? The writer will then create an organized piece of writing that explains their survival plan. Teachers: click here to read the entire lesson plan.

6-Trait Overview for this Lesson:

The focus trait in this writing assignment is organization.  The writer will construct sequencing sentences that will allow the reader to follow the events of their survival plan.  The support trait in this assignment is word choice.  A strong use of adjectives and nouns are encouraged through the graphic organizer.
