Launching
a Fantastic Voyage

organizing the start of
a sci-fi-like adventure

Student Writer Instructions:

You will be writing a story where the characters go on a fantastic journey.  Chapter four of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle will be your inspiration as you write this story.

Step #1:  Click the buttons below to see choices for main characters, unusual modes of transportation, and destinations.  Your job as writer: no matter what three choices you make, launch a science-fiction-like story that is amazing, unusual, interesting, beautiful, ominous or terrifying.

Step #2:     Use the graphic organizer to plan a trip to your chosen destination.  Use your mode of transportation in an unusual, science-fiction-like way.  Make the trip to the destination seem challenging.  Write a three-paragraph rough draft of your story.

Step #3:  Remember the rules for good idea development;  focus on balancing showing and telling skills, and use excellent adjectives and verbs when you draft your story.  Revise your rough draft to include adjectives and verbs that make your sentences interesting and compelling to read.  Your goal is for the reader to feel they are in the story with the characters, feeling their emotions, and almost even thinking the thoughts of the characters as events unfold.

Step #4:  Use the Idea Development Post-It and Word Choice Post-It to score yourself on your use of the traits for this writing assignment.
