Borrowing Narrative Skills from Mr. Fletcher

using a "Prompts in Reverse" technique to inspire your writers

Student Writer Instructions:

In Marshfield Dreams, Ralph Fletcher shares real stories from his childhood. Most of his stories are based on smaller, everyday kind of happenings, but Fletcher uses writing skills that makes ordinary kinds of life-events seem wonderful and interesting.

If you read from this book, notice how Mr. Fletcher captures your attention and holds onto it throughout the brief chapters. See if you can discover what writing skills the author uses to make this happen.

For this writing assignment, you will be writing about something from your own life--inspired by one of Ralph Fletcher's chapters--and you will try to use one or two of the writing skills in your own writing that you see author Fletcher use.

Like Mr. Fletcher, can you write about an everyday kind of occurrence in a way that grabs your reader and doesn't let him/her go?
