exploring color and its effect on mood and setting

This lesson was created by NNWP Teacher Consultant Dena Harrison. Check out all of Dena's online writing lessons by clicking here.

This writing prompt inspired by

the song "Grey Street" by the Dave Matthews Band.

Three-Sentence Overview of this Lesson:

After listening to the song “Grey Street” by the Dave Matthews Band, as well as the song “Blu is a Mood” by Blu Cantrell, students will explore the lyrics and discover what role color can play when combined with a particular setting. Students will respond first with prior knowledge and feelings about color and then discover more information about color and mood thanks to teacher- gathered information about color from the internet or other sources. Once they are armed with this information, students will choose their own color and setting on which to write their own poem or song. Teachers: Click here to see the entire lesson plan.

6-Trait Overview for this Lesson:

The focus trait for this lesson is idea development; students will be able to gather lots of information on the meaning of certain colors and will apply those meanings to the setting of their choice. The support trait here is word choice; students may start off learning about basic colors and their meanings, but the goal during revision is to be able to expand their word choices by choosing different shades of their colors through a thesaurus or dictionary.
