Student Writer Instructions:
After analyzing song lyrics and thinking about them in comparison to poems with the Venn Diagram side of your graphic organizer, try to decipher with the given handout (Poem or Lyric) if the options are songs or poems. Pay attention to WORD CHOICE and IDEA DEVELOPMENT of the given options. How do the words and stylistic aspects reveal if they are songs or poems? Do those traits specifically align with one or the other?
Now that you have discovered the answers and discussed with your class how and why you made your choices, it is now YOUR TURN to write your own. Turn your graphic organizer over and copy your favorite song and favorite poem from the given options. Then try to mimic the author/song writer for each.
Remember, pay attention to WORD CHOICE when drafting. Also, chose a topic (IDEA DEVELOPMENT) that is fitting to what you are passionate about? Would you write a song about your cat?---Okay, maybe if you are Phoebe from Friends--but would you?
If you become stuck looking for ideas, use the interactive button for some topics to write about. Finally, don’t forget to look at the bottom of your drafting graphic organizer for an Extra Credit option.
