Three-Sentence Overview of this Lesson:

In this lesson, students will use a song by Jack Johnson to develop ideas about how to “green” up their own classrooms, learning two songs (written to the tune of old classics) that will inspire them to brainstorm ideas for reducing, reusing, and recycling in school. Then, inspired by Bill Martin Jr.'s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, students will create a classroom “Green Guide Book,” listing ideas that the teacher and the students are willing to adopt and use as part of the classroom greening. Older students can then create original songs about "greening up" their schools, inspired by tunes of familiar songs. Teachers: Click here to see the entire lesson plan.

6-Trait Overview for this Lesson:

Focusing on reducing, reusing and recycling in the classroom will give students an avenue for working on idea development as they generate ideas for the greening of their own classrooms. When the students write a classroom green guide book, they will additionally focus on the support trait of conventions.
