Overview of this Lesson:

I love to start my school year off with a song that I feel will inspire kids to consider the upcoming year. After watching the "Breakaway" video and spending some time dissecting the song's lyrics, I knew that Kelly Clarkson would be my inspiration. Inspiration also came from another American icon: People Magazine. While waiting in a grocery line, I was struck by how many people just picked up the magazine and read it while they waited to be checked out. Inspired, I knew that this was the beginning of My Big Break-- a lesson that inspires my students to think big as they plan for their upcoming academic year ! 6-Trait Overview for this Lesson:

The focus trait for this writing assignment is idea development; students will consider the idea of becoming famous and making the cover of an infamous magazine, People. Moving from the mundane to inspirational, attention to detail and showing versus telling will be critical. The support trait is organization; students will carefully consider the direction of their piece as they integrate details that support the main idea.
