Hoot & Howl...

...your way into Halloween
poetry through strong verbs

The writing of author Joan Horton is currently inspiring student writers to try new techniques with the traits of word choice and conventions.

Halloween Sentinel
by Shannon, sixth grade poet

Big orange monster sitting on the porch.
Scaring trick-or-treaters with its frightening face.
Oddly shaped, hollow beast glares into the night,
Candle light flickering through jagged teeth,
Sitting silently as if nothing is happening,
As though saying, "Pass me if you dare!"
Standing like a soldier at attention,
Pointed stem like a sword ready to attack,
Quietly guarding what treats are left
As the candle's light fades, the jack-o-lantern loses life.

Halloween Night
by Avery, sixth grade poet

It's Halloween night
and the sun's almost down,
I joyfully whoop
as I put on my black gown.

The whole bottom is torn,
one sleeve has a rip,
and there are a few spiders
stuck to the tip,

My stockings are striped
lime green and black,
but myfavorite part
is my tall pointed hat.

I carry a broomstick.
Ooh! What a fright!
With a cackle and a cry
there's a witch out tonight.

Halloween is Here
by Jack, sixth grade poet

Screeching skeletons stalking
Howling ghosts flying
Stomping werewolves rumbling
Bellowing bats dancing
Creepy vampires zooming.

Halloween is here.
