The Five-Transition
Adventure Planner

playing with new transition words

Student Writer Instructions:

Jules Feiffer celebrates the word meanwhile in his picture book Meanwhile...

The word, when used by the story's main character, becomes a tool that moves the story along nicely.

Meanwhile is what's known as a transition word in English. It is a tool used by a writer who wants to move to a story from one idea or location to another.

The words and and then are also transitions, but they are very commonplace, often used too often by young writers. Meanwhile is a much more unique transition. For this writing assignment, you will attempt to use transitions that are just as unique.

Use the graphic organizer your teacher gives you to create an adventure story that uses (at least) five unique transitions. Like Jules Feiffer, have fun as you plan to use the words to move your story along.
