When Sophie Gets Angry -- Really, Really Angry... is a great picture book about dealing with a hard emotion in a positive way. The writing assignment has students explore true stories about times they were angry.
Three-Sentence Overview of this Lesson:
Molly Bang’s book, When Sophie Get’s Angry—Really, Really Angry…, provides students with positive ways of dealing with anger. When students explore their own methods of dealing with anger and then talk and write about new ways of expressing that anger, they use their writing as a vehicle into their own thinking processes. This on-line prompt encourages students to generate writing ideas as a way of reflection, especially in the area of expressing feelings and modifying behavior. The focus trait in this writing assignment is idea development;
the writer’s goal is to compose lists of ideas prior to and after reading the “mentor text” to explore and modify his thinking. When the writer self-reflects to create his memory piece about an angry time, he will use “showing writing.” The support trait in this assignment is voice;
because the writer is showing himself acting on his feelings, the reader will be able to “see” the writer.
