This Lesson's Title:

Alliterative Insects

launching an original story inspired by sentences created for one's writers notebook

This lesson was built for WritingFix after being proposed by Northern Nevada teacher
Elgin Thompson
at an
SBC-sponsored inservice class
.

The intended "mentor text" to be used when teaching this on-line lesson is the picture book Clara Caterpillar by Pamela Duncan Edwards. Before writing, students should listen to and discuss the writing style of this book's author.

Check out Clara Caterpillar at Amazon.com.

Washoe County teachers, click here to search for this book at the county library.

Three-Sentence Overview of this Lesson:

The writer will devote a page in his/her writers notebook to insect alliteration sentences. Students will create a dozen or more sentences with powerful verbs and adjectives to store in their notebooks. Students will turn their favorite sentence into an entire story about an insect. Teachers: Click here to see the entire lesson plan.

6-Trait Overview for this Lesson:

The focus trait in this writing assignment is word choice; verbs and adjectives will be explored as students create alliterative sentences about interesting insects.  The support trait in this assignment is idea development; as students prepare to turn their favorite sentence into a whole story, they will be asked to brainstorm interesting and memorable details to include in their stories.
