Reading in the Content Areas: Teaching Content Area Vocabulary
We're always growing! Watch this new page of resources grow during the 2008-09 school year!

In 2006, the WritingFix website co-sponsored the creation of a quality print resource for 4th-12th grade teachers. The Reading in the Content Areas Guide provided ideas for teachers in five areas: 1) engaging students before, during, and after reading; 2) teaching content area vocabulary; 3) using text patterns to teach reading comprehension in non-fiction writing; 4) note-taking and summarizing strategies; 5) using collaborative reading strategies.

Over 3000 copies of the Reading in the Content Areas Guide are now being used not only in Northern Nevada but also across the United States, Canada, and Australia. Teachers who have purchased and used the guide have adapted many of its strategies to fit their teaching style, and many have shared those adaptations with us.

During the 2008-09 school year, WritingFix will be further developing its collection of resources that focus on the connections between writing and reading comprehension. New ideas on collaborative reading strategies--ones not featured in the Reading in the Content Areas Guide--will eventually be housed on this page.

If you have ideas on collaborative reading that you'd like to share, contact us at webmaster@writingfix.com. We always send a free NNWP publication with teachers whose ideas we post here.

During 2008-09, please continue to check back with us. This page will grow as the school year progresses.

A Book Recommendation: Vocabulary Instruction

In the fall, we will begin posting new resources here! Check back with us soon.

The research and writing of Robert Marzano is currently inspiring many of our projects at WritingFix. Our Comparison & Contrast Page and our Summarization Page were both inspired by his synthesis of educational research.

Building Academic Vocabulary: Teacher's Manual by Robert Marzano is the book we will be sharing with teachers as we develop this new page on vocabulary instruction here at WritingFix.

A Resource Recommendation: Vocabulary Instruction

This cool little book explores a fun idea: learning new vocabulary words through mnemonic devices and accompanying cartoons. It's sometimes hard to find new, but Amazon offers it (used) through its third-party sellers.

Vocabutoons: Vocabulary Cartoons...the New Way to Build a More Powerful Vocabulary --shows students great examples of cartooned mnemonic devices. The skillful teachers can easily show off the models, then challenge students to create their own vocabutoons.
