A Mini-Workshop:
Magical Creatures Field
Guide

This step-by-step mini-workshop was proposed by Northern Nevada teacher Denise Trakas-Wendt while attending a teacher in-service sponsored by the Northern Nevada Writing Project.

Writer Instructions:

All you children must know that our world is filled with magical creatures, from good fairies to nasty boggarts.  But what magical creatures exist that aren't in fairy tales or the Harry Potter books?  It is your job to help create these creatures, then create a book that helps to identify them.

HELP!  Many magical creatures are still not in our Magical Creature Field Guide!  We don't know who they are, where they live, what they eat, or what their magical abilities are.  Worst of all, we don't know what these creatures even look like!  Please help by writing about your unique creatures with strong details, so we can truly know the magical creature that you write about.

Make your finished writing look just like the writing you'd see in an actual field guide, like this on-line entry for an ocelot .

Hit the button below to start this workshop. If you accidentally hit the button and go past a step, click on your mouse's right button and choose undo to go back a step.
